About the Author: Skye Hardwick Edmonds is the emotive childhood photographer behind Work of Heart Photography™ and spent over three years teaching photography workshops around the country. In 2009 she retired from workshops for a few years to be able to spend more time with her family, but now she is teaching once again with her Sweetlight Collective Workshops. She has also created “The Workshop Workbook” to continue on her teaching to photographers around the world.

She believes photography is about more than the relationship between light and shadows — there is an undeniable heart-connection between an artist and their images. This connection is essential to create images that are authentic and awe-inspiring.

Known as the children’s photographer who drags vintage furniture outdoors for sessions; Skye wholeheartedly believes an old building, complete with peeling paint, will make the perfect backdrop for a portrait.

She resides in the ever-sunny Southern California with her husband and her son, and visits her hometown of Pittsburgh PA as often as possible.

Baby Feet: use on areas that are red or purplish, like baby feet. Will help change the color to more skin-like.
Blue Eyes: use on blue eyes, to make them a bit more blue. Will brighten and sharpen also.
Brighten Faces: use to brighten faces. Brightens without making washed out or losing contrast.
Brown Eyes: use on brown eyes to make them lighter and warmer. Will sharpen also.
Cool it Down: use on faces that are a bit too warm. Slightly cools.
Desaturate: helpful when reducing areas that are too heavy with color.
Fix Clipping: use on areas that are still clipped after using Recovery slider in Basics pan-el. Make sure to only brush on the clipped area, not on area around it.
Fix Yellow Casts: use on areas that are too yellow.
Green Eyes: use on green eyes to enhance the green color and sharpen.
Paint on Color: use to enhance color of clothes or other objects in picture.
Warm-up Areas: use on areas that are still a touch cool, just to add a little bit of warmth.
Brighten: use for general brightness. Can be used as a gradated filter or a brush
Darken: really darkens. Can be used as a graduated filter or a brush.

Blue Skies: use from the top of picture and pull down to increase the blue of the sky. Will not replace a blown sky.
Colorful Background: use to subtly intense colors in the background
Cool Haze: adds a cool haze across part of image (your choice)
Darken Flash: use to darken the bright foreground of images where flash was fired
De-Haze: use on images that have haze from sun hitting the camera sensor
Green Grass: makes grass greener
Rose Haze: adds a sweet, soft rosy haze to image
Shine Light: use to add light to an area, good for lighting the dark background on im-ages where flash was fired (foreground is too bright/background too dark)
Soften Background: subtly soften the background
Sunlight: adds very warm, bright light, just like the sun
Warm Haze: adds a warm, soft haze

I cannot say thank you enough to Robin Long for writing this wonderful newborn photography guide. I have been basically teaching myself by studying top photographers photos online. The hardest part was knowing what was missing and basically guessing at my workflow with much trial and error. This guide filled in ALL the gaps and put everything in the appropriate order for me. The most powerful tools I got from the guide was using a doll to see light, the order of poses (which do not disturb baby) and business sense behind the scenes. I did two session right after getting the guide and both babies stayed soundly asleep as I moved from one pose to the next which cut my shooting time from 4 hours to 2 hours. As I read Robin Long’s Newborn Photography Guide, I felt like she was in the room with me, talking me through my camera and its settings, setting up my studio for my clients and showing me everything I would need to get my session right. If you have never used any of Nicole Van's products you are missing out. Her website is called Flourish. The flourish web site has action packages, textures, borders and templates for Photo Shop, Light Room and PS Elements. Flourish even offers workshops which I have been dying to go to. My personal favorite is the Color Pop Action for PS, it works wonders. It brings out the color in dull photos, it even work wonders on perfectly fine photos. The action adds that wow effect. You will find that all of her products come with very helpful instructions on how to use them, which is nice for all of those newbies like me. I had pretty much no experience using Photo Shop when I bought my first actions but with her how to videos and instructions you would never have known I started out clueless. – Laurie Cutler

Last month I stopped by Flourish looking for a Photoshop action that would add sun flare to a photo I was editing. (And for those of you who don’t use Photoshop, actions are automated steps it runs to edit a photo. So if you want to make the same edit to multiple photos, actions save you so much time.) I’d actually already looked in a few other places and couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I was about to give up right before discovering Flourish’s Sunshine pack. It comes with 10 different actions and are very easy to use. What you’ll find some actions sold out there have “stop” commands telling you to adjust something before it moves on to the next step. Not a big deal normally, but I find that some creators don’t explain the instructions very well. It’s a pet peeve of mine, because if I don’t understand it then I won’t use it. And then I feel like I’ve wasted my money. Not cool! But Sunshine’s sun flare? Simple, clear instructions that eliminated the need for me to figure things out by myself. After all, the point of using actions is to save time, and that is what Flourish did for me. If this is any indication of what the rest of Nichole’s products are like, I’m totally budgeting for more! – Wendy Wang

My photo editing always begins in Adobe Photoshop ACR with the RAW image of the file. I immediately apply a preset, my favorites of which come from Nichole Van. Then I tweak the exposure, white balance, and other features. It takes seconds per photo, because her actions are THAT good. ROLL UP:

Not only is this the page where everything is auto calculated for you, it separates it per month so you can easily track which months were your busiest etc. It also calculates all of your session fees (which rolled up from your ‘customer database’ page), your total orders and internet sales and then calculates if you made a loss or profit for that month based on your expenses!! If you went in the negative, it shows in red.

This is the easiest software to use! Almost everything has a drop down box!
